Education, Academic and School related issues.
- Application for Addmission/Entrance Exam/Before Admission
- Direct application or via-representative application
Summary: Direct application enables you to save money but you have to
do everything by yourself and in English. Via Representative on the
contrary, you can do almost everything in your own language.
I came here via a direct application.
Note: every country has her
own representative.
- Entrance Examination (2013/04/21)
Summary: I took the Entrance Exam in Seoul in South Korea on April
21st. I did very well on the written part(multiple choice questions)
but I almost failed because of interview(oral examination). Be warned
that interview part is very unique for people from written-exam
oriented countries.
- Intense Pre-Medicine Summer Course(2013 August)
As a summary, the classes are really good, although the quality
of class is different among subjects; Biology(Great) > Chemistry(Good) >>
Physics(Not so good).
- People say I came here by double directs.
First Direct: I applied directly to the University without any agents,
which is rare cases for some countries.
Second Direct: I was accepted to the Medical School directly without the
need to go to one-year preparatory course at Mc-Daniel in Budapest.
- Medical school begins!
- The Opening Ceremonny (September 2nd 2013)
Summary: Very Formal. The rector, the Dean and other faculity members kindly
celebrate our admission to the university. All Freshman join in formal
wears; from Hungarean, International, German Programs. It takes
place in the hall of the main building.

Opening Ceremony
- Orientation and, Matriculation and Suject
Registration for the first semester (2013/08/28-29)
Summary: On the orientation day, you will learn the education system
of Medical School. Then you will formally register as a student on
Matriculation.
- Campus Tour (August 30 2013)
Summary: Messy again. We don't know where the classrooms are even
after the campus tour... Such a campus tour... :-<
- School system, School life
General Information: how does the school life go?
- Nationalities of Students
Summary: We are from 66 countries. See more details in the link.
- Pass rate (September 2014)
Summary: Pass Rate is low; e.g. pass rate of first year to second year is
as low as 30-50%. In other words
70%-50% of students fail and they need at least one extra year, for
which they need to pay the annual tuition fee of approximately 15,000USD.
- Six Year Curriculum (September 2013)
Summary: We learn knowledge structrally; we are building up one
knowlege on another. This structural knowlege concept are properly
taken into our curriculum.
- Time Table of Class / First Semester (September 2013)
Summary: We are very busy with classes; We have classes from
8:00 AM to 16:00, 17:00, sometimes 18:00. Exception is only
Friday. But thus Friday is volunerable to substitute class and exam.
- Group 6 (September 2013)
Group 6: We do labs and seminars with this group.
At the begining of the first year we were 13 people.

Group 6 at the class of Hungarian Language, September 2013.
- Exam Period(Feb 2014)
We take exams in the exam period. Exams are tough. you have to study very hard.
Library in Exam Period(crowded with students) |
 Library in non-Exam Period(Nobody...) |
- Exam Period: How tough it
could be (June 2014)
Summary: There are some concrete examples to show how tough
Exam Period is.
- Basic Module: The first two years
Summary: Basic Module is the first two years, which consist of
4 semesters. You will find the 1st semester hard, but it is just
a beginning and it will be even harder.
- Campus(Oct 2013)
The university system is large and there are many faculities;
ie. medicine, business and ecnomics, science, engineering etc.
Campus is spread over the town. I found it is much larger than I had
expected. The faculty of medicine is rather in a place, though its
hospital is scattered in the city.
- Subjects
- Physiology
Summary: Physiology is also generally terrible in their
teaching. Lecture, labs, exams almost everything is bad. only Lab
topics are not bad, but their implementation is horrible. They are very
stingy about exam questions; they are taking every measure to hide
their questions. They disclosed that 33% failed at physiology
1 in English language course, which is high.
- Dissection
Summary: Dissection is a subject to disassemble and observe a cadaver(a real human body) with a scapel and forcep. I think a real human body is used for this purpose only in medical school.
- BioPhysics
Summary: Generally it is good enough. But Compared to Biology
and Chemistry, the subject does not reach their level. As a good
feature, their labs are good and even better than Biology and
Chemistry. The book was also unexpectedly good.
- Biology (Molecular Cell Biology)
Summary: As a whole, it is really good. Especially
Prof. Szeberenyi's lectures were great and one of the best lectures
I have ever had; straight forward, concise although the content he is
teaching is not easy; It is him that sounds everything easier.
Brief Notes called Syllabus edited by him was useful.
Seminar was quite helpful. Only Labs were not so good.
- Introduction to BioChemistry
Summary:Their teaching is generally good, except for
lectures. Exams are in written form, which is rare in Hungary. Their
book Organic and biooragnic chemistry written by Hungarian was good
unexpectedly.
- Anatomy and Histology
Summary: Our bad test results are not only because we
are lazy, obviously their teaching is bad. I don't understand the
school, and even ministry of education in Hungary, leave this
inefficiency without taking any measures. I sometimes feel they
even intentionally fail/downgrade us.
- Fluorescent Mouse: an genetically modified organism
Summary: They are Fluorescent mice, genetically modified organism in a
secret chamber in Univ of Pecs Medical School, Hungary.

Fluorescent Mouse: a genetically modified organism
- My opinion and Complaint about education here in Hungary
- Professors' and Teachers' English Level(Oct 2013)
Summary: Their English is basically good enough, although
Enlgish is their Foereign Language. There are a few exceptions.
- An Irrational Rule of BioPhysics Dept(Oct 2013)
Summary: The Biophysics Dept has the rule of No Typed but Hand-Written
Summary. I think it is not rational and thus should be criticised to
change. Either typed or hand-written should be a student choice;
especially forcing hand-written is against the age of computer and
even uneducational. Rule represents People. Abusurd Rule represents
absurd people. Thus we need to be always sensitive to our own rules.
- Low Quality Service by Student
Support Staff(September 2013)
The overall quality of student support service is unallowably low, if
information flow, general management, proactiveness,
communications between teams etc are considered.
- Student Housing Service (2013 August)
Summary: They are very kind and helpful with their Hungarean language
but they are not so professional. They can help you find your good
apartment but it takes more time than necessary.
- Extra-Curricular life
- Annual Memorial Burial Service(Nov 2014)
Summary: As many medical universities have, we also have Annual Memorial
Burial Service Commemorating Donors with families. I think this is
a good practice because it reminds us that each person(body) is
loved by their family. That is what we tend to forget during hands-on
practice.

Annual Memorial Burial Service
- Fly in the Sky on a Glider(May 11th 2014)
We can choose an activity as a Physical Education(PE). I took glider
and we have taken many theoretical lessons during the semester(10
times). But finally it is time to get on a glider and take off into
the sky!!!

in the glider (tandem with a real pilot) with a
emergency parashute on my back(blue)
- Freshman Camp (2013 August)
Summary: That was great beyond words. If you miss it you will regret
as people say. I can highly recommend that you should join it. We had
many activities; Lazer Tag, Bassaboll(volleyball with trumpolins on
each side), wall climbing and so on. There was a dance party every
night; good DJs and rock or pank musicians were invited;we danced nights
away. These are just part of it. You won't forget this camp for your
whole life.

Profile: Who am I?
I am now living in Pecs, Hungary. I am Japanese. I came here to
become an international doctor. I am learning Medicine at University
of Pecs Medical School(UP-MS). I have a Buchelor of Science and Master of
Science respectively. My major was Computer Science. I worked
for a private company as a researcher in Tokyo and lived in Yokohama,
next to Tokyo, before I came here.
My another passion is travelling;
Hungary is my approximately 50th country to visit :)
CHOICE: That is how it began.
There is such a choice; if you take it, your life will be yours, but
if you don't, whatever the reason is, your life will not be yours
anymore and somehow you know you will regret you did not take the
choice for the rest of your life. Such choice for me is becoming a
doctor. -- Quaotation from the Opening of my Letter of Motivation --
