英会話試験@内閣府 2005/05/29(Sun)

Recorded on 2005/05/29(Sun)

Below are all I can remember.

I: Interivewer from the US.
M: Me

I and M: Greetings.(Nice-to-meet-you like stuff.)

(Tongue Smoother)
I: Have you ever lived in any foreign countries?
M: Live? How long is considered as live?
   I: A year is enough.
M: No. But I have been to over 30 countries.
I: Where is the best country for you?
   M: Italy, I guess.
   I: Why?
M: Because people were nice and cuisines were suitable for me.
I: Have you studied English overseas?
M: Yes, I have. Two times in the US.
The first time was in Iowa State University.
I: Oh, I am from Iowa. There is nothing but corn fields.
(With a disgusting expression on his face)
M: Maybe you're right. But it's not bad for us, because
we went there to study, not play.
   I: Hummm... The second time?
M: In Columbus college in Georgia. It is close to Atlanta.
I: Did you have any bad experiences during your stays?
M: I can't remember. Maybe I had, but now all I can remember is
      good memories.
   I: Hummm...

(Serious Topic #1)
I: Would it be OK, if Okinawa became an independent country?
   M: It's OK for Okinawan.
   I: How about for Mainlanders?
M: It's rather complicated, because we need the US troops.
Think about North Korea, for instance.
I: Oh, but we have Self Defense Force. They are pretty good.
M: I know they are pretty good, but North Korea has nuclear ambition.
Normal weapons are useless before nuclear one, I think.
   I: Humm...
I: Think they are independent once.
   M: OK...?
I: Tell me about how it became part of Japan.
M: (Oh, MY... I don't know anything about it, I thought.
A couple of seconds later, feeling longer, finally I said, honestly)
      I am afraid I don't know.
I: Satsuma conquered it in 1609. Since then it has been a part of Japan.
M: Oh, I did not know. Thank you for your explanation.

(Serious Topic #2)
I: Give me one of your favorite historical characters.
   M: Honestly I don't have any favorites...
but... OK, I picked up Tokugawa Ieyasu.
   I: Hummm.
(He seemed bored, I thought. He picked one by himself.)
      Tell me about Saigou Takamori.
M: (Oh, MY... I don't know anything about him, but quiclky
I felt I had to say something, remembering about the character.)
Well, he lived at the end of Edo Period.
He was from Satuma, which is now called Kagoshima.
And he fought against the Edo Bakufu with Choushu-Han.
That's all I know about him.

I: OK, that's it. Thank you very much.
M: Oh, at last may I have your name please?
   I: Henry.
M: It's nice to talk with you, Henry, and thank you very much.
