- Abstract
A person has been possibly infected during/in a microbiology
laboratory(“Labocomial” infection). This is the report about it. The
person thinks it is “labocomial” because of the following reasons.
- The person was healthy for a long time. But suddenly he felt
sick. That is coincidented with the practice.
- He felt that his sickness is different from his usual symptoms of
cold, so he wonders the causative agents are from a different
origin. i.e. Not an environmental origin.
- His symptoms matches the microbes we used in the lab. i.e. S. Aureus
exotoxin. These symptoms are general and can be caused by other
agents as well, but some symptoms rarely happened to him
before. Thus he suspects a different origin again.
Note: Currently he does not know it is really a case of “Labocomial” infection, because S. Aureus is an environmental bacteria too. Only these observations indicate it is a possible/likely cause.
- The purpose of this document:
- Report the case and make it clear if it was really a “labocomial”
case and take an action if necessary. Especially S. Aureus can cause
endocariditis, which is irreversible once the myocardial cells are
damaged.
- Collect other cases: I wonder similar kind of infections have
happened among other students or not , recently or in the past.
- By taking necessary actions we don't need to reduce the variety of
bacteria we can handle during our practices. It is not good if
S. Aureus petri-dish is removed from our labs. Rather we continue to
use it safely with necessary safety measures.
- Details:
A healthy student became sick after microbiology laboratory, during
which he performed catalase reaction with Staphylococcus Aureus. He
is the first student to perform the experiment; he opened the
petri-dish first time and possibly inhale the densest air with the
bacteria.
The Person has been very healthy. He has not even caught a cold for
more than year. He cares about his health, eg. He goes to
sportsclub/gym regularly because he has known from his experience
that it improved his immune system; Before he started to go to gym,
he had had a cold 2/3 times a year, and regularly go to a gym then
the colds disappears from him and stop going gym again he had colds
sometimes. This experience made him believe in the connection
between exercise and improved immune system. Anyway he was healthy
individual with high health consciousness.
- Progress.
- The Lab was at 8:00 on Thursday. (Oct 29)
- On Friday(Oct 30) he started to feel a bit sick. He felt sick on Saturday. (Oct 31)
- He felt really sick on Sunday(Nov 1). These symptoms match to the symptoms of Exotoxin by S. Aureus(Toxic Shock syndrome).
Symptoms:
- High Fever.
He did not measure the degree. But He felt very cold even after he wore 5 layers of clothes. Also he had a terrible shivering. That indicates a high fever. This coldness and shivering are extraordinarily bad (compared to usual cold).
- Nausea. He almost vomited. Note: He does not usually vomit even if he has a cold.
- Watery Diarrhea. He still has this symptom. He does not usually have diarrhea, either.
- His immune system now overtook the bacteria and He is feeling better. But still he has diarrhea. (It may indicate his immune system overcome the bacteria, but some exotoxin has still remained.)
- Relevant Note:
- Also I wonder there are any measures taken in other medical school
generally.
- During the class, he had a question to the teacher; These infection
happens only to immuno-suppresssed individuals. She answered,
“No. It happens to normal people.” Then he asked, “so people like
us, students, can be affected.” and he wondered it is ok to deal
with these bacteria without any protections. That had been somehow
in his mind. And he started to suspect that his infection might be
connected with this lab.
