Possible "Labocomial" Infection Case Report

November 11, 2015

  1. Abstract
  2. A person has been possibly infected during/in a microbiology laboratory(“Labocomial” infection). This is the report about it. The person thinks it is “labocomial” because of the following reasons.

Note: Currently he does not know it is really a case of “Labocomial” infection, because S. Aureus is an environmental bacteria too. Only these observations indicate it is a possible/likely cause.

  3. The purpose of this document:
    1. Report the case and make it clear if it was really a “labocomial” case and take an action if necessary. Especially S. Aureus can cause endocariditis, which is irreversible once the myocardial cells are damaged.
    2. Collect other cases: I wonder similar kind of infections have happened among other students or not , recently or in the past.
    3. By taking necessary actions we don't need to reduce the variety of bacteria we can handle during our practices. It is not good if S. Aureus petri-dish is removed from our labs. Rather we continue to use it safely with necessary safety measures.

  4. Details:
  5. A healthy student became sick after microbiology laboratory, during which he performed catalase reaction with Staphylococcus Aureus. He is the first student to perform the experiment; he opened the petri-dish first time and possibly inhale the densest air with the bacteria.

The Person has been very healthy. He has not even caught a cold for more than year. He cares about his health, eg. He goes to sportsclub/gym regularly because he has known from his experience that it improved his immune system; Before he started to go to gym, he had had a cold 2/3 times a year, and regularly go to a gym then the colds disappears from him and stop going gym again he had colds sometimes. This experience made him believe in the connection between exercise and improved immune system. Anyway he was healthy individual with high health consciousness.

  6. Progress.
    1. The Lab was at 8:00 on Thursday. (Oct 29)
    2. On Friday(Oct 30) he started to feel a bit sick. He felt sick on Saturday. (Oct 31)
    3. He felt really sick on Sunday(Nov 1). These symptoms match to the symptoms of Exotoxin by S. Aureus(Toxic Shock syndrome).
      Symptoms:
      1. High Fever.
      2. He did not measure the degree. But He felt very cold even after he wore 5 layers of clothes. Also he had a terrible shivering. That indicates a high fever. This coldness and shivering are extraordinarily bad (compared to usual cold).
      3. Nausea. He almost vomited. Note: He does not usually vomit even if he has a cold.
      4. Watery Diarrhea. He still has this symptom. He does not usually have diarrhea, either.
    4. His immune system now overtook the bacteria and He is feeling better. But still he has diarrhea. (It may indicate his immune system overcome the bacteria, but some exotoxin has still remained.)
