Rotation in Tokyo Medical University
For 6th year Rotation
Tokyo Medical University is a sister school of Semmleweis University
and University of Pecs. I went to the school to do rotations of 6th
year. My experience there was very good. Thus I made this
page to recommend the sister school, especially for somebody
interested in Japan. Call for application by our school does miss some
good information. It will be a big plus if you know some Japanese language.
Why it is good?
The most important thing to know is that it is a sister
school of Semmelweis and thus it is accredited by our school, which
means
your rotation in TMU is recognized by Semmelweis. (if it is not
accredited, your rotation will not be recognized thus you need to
repeat it in an accredited institute.)
It is very genenerous; the fee for your rotation is free.
Even the accomodation is ready and it is also free of charge. It is a dorm
in an old building, however it is in the best location; it is very
close to the university hospital and in the middle of sky scrapers.
People are very kind and helpful, including doctors and
international student officers.
Managers of the dorm are also so kind that they made home
parties a couple of times with their home-made Japanese foods.
They will open a new hospital (800 beds) in July 2019.
How to Apply?
It is a bilateral agreement program, thus there will be a call of
application from the Erasmus office of Semmelweis University. Follow
the instructions. There might be a screening process, if there are
many applicatns. It seems there is an agreement that only two people
can come as "an exchange"; Two TMU students will visit Semmelweis in
April.
Department of Choice.
Some department uses English in a part of conference. Thus you would
understand more if you don't know Japanese.
Depts which Use English
Cardiovascular Surgery Dept: They use English in a part of their
conference.
Thoracic Surgery Dept: the head of Dept said they also use
English.
Depts which Do not use English
Obstetrics and Gynecology: They do not use English.
Emergency Medicine: the same. But they are 3rd degree Emergency
Dept, which is the highest. Thus you can see patients with serious
conditions.
There are, of course, many more departments as we have in Semmelweis.
Currently we know these departments only.
Free time
It is a good oppotunity to see around Japan, too, to observe its
unique culture, history, nature and technology. For example,
Historic area of Kyoto, Mt. Fuji, Shibuya, Akihabara, Harajuku, and
take Shinkansen, the world-fastest and comfortable bullet train.
Student Coordinator Office in TMU: if you have any questions to
them, I can connect you to the sister school. :)
