How-to-Study for each Subject

Nothing is difficult when you have determined to do it.

  1. 1st and 2nd year
    1. anatomy/histology/embryology
    2. read here!
    3. Physiology
      • Do it
        1. BRS Physiology is enough for a book.
        2. Kaplan Physiology with a lecture note.
        3. If you don't have this, you can get it from here.(password locked.) If you need a password, please check the bottom and contact me :)
        4. Some past papers.
      • Do not do it.
        1. (big) Guyton. It is simply too much. You don't need this much. You will be lost in this much.
    4. Biochemistry
      • Do it: Lehninger. Big, but it is a good book. I think there is no ways to study Biochemisty better than with Lehninger.

  2. 3rd Year:
    1. Pathology(My final grade 5)
      • Do it
        1. Pathoma!
        2. This is super amazingly good lectures. It is 34.5 hours and covers basically everything. You watch it twice, then you will be OK for the theoretical part of the exam, which is the biggest part.
        3. Histopathology
        4. I also have a set of histopathology slde lectures. That was also quite helpful.
        5. Robin's basic pathology: pocket version
        6. It was useful, since the lecture was strictly following the textbook.
        7. Exam note
        8. printed one and use as a supplimentary.
      • Don't do it
        1. Kaplan pathology
        2. Pathoma is way much better.
        3. Robin's Textbook(the big one)
        4. I did not use it. I don't think it is necessary but the pocket version was useful.
    2. Microbiology(My final grade 5)
      1. Generally Sketchy Micro and Kaplan will do.
      2. Sketchy Micro
      3. Amazingly interesting materials. The otherwise super-boring memorizing-all part is made much more fun by this.
      4. Kaplan Micro
      5. This is also nice, rather orthodox style, compared to Sketchy Micro. Sketchy Micro is focuing on making memorizing easier and fun thus it lacks the theory part. For example, HIV virus, Malaria, Hep B, these big topic needs a bit more theory than Sketchy explains, then you will understand better. Examiner will ask your understanding part too.
      6. Kaplan Micro lecture notes
      7. It contains a nice summary at the end. this summary largely overlaps the topic list V(the summary topics).
    3. Pathophysiology(My final grade 5)
      1. ECG
        1. the book: the only EKG book you will ever need.
        2. They teach how to read the EKG mainly but not the theory. They will, however, ask the basic pathomechanism too. Read the book to cover the area. I almost failed due to this part, and I got only four for semi-fianl.
        3. lecture movies
        4. I have a set of lecture movies. This is old but it is less than 3 hours and you can review everything quickly. In that sense it is a good one, since we don't have much time to review in details in exam period.
      2. Topics(theory)
        1. Largely overlapping with pathology.
        2. Largely overlapping internal medicine.(endocrine), or vice versa.
        3. a little bit more focusing on physiology. in that point, Kaplan physiology will do.
      3. Hematology
        1. we do the theory in the pathology. That would be naturally enough.
        2. they ask rather morphology of characteristic cells. how does a blast cell looks like, etc. but they don't ask the vague things, eg. differnce between promyelocytes and myelocytes and metamyelocytes unless it is very obvious.
